The dogs and puppies
available below have been saved, thanks to their
rescuer and
foster
carer
Gloria, and both she and
another carer
Sandra
are now trying to find them permanent homes.
These special dogs have received publicity by one of the earliest successfully rehomed dogs 'Mali' winning Woollahra's first cutest dog competition in September 2009 and also by articles in both the Wentworth and Southern Couriers, the Mosman Daily and 'This Life' magazine.
The puppies, which are fostered by Gloria 'The Dog Lady' have had a wonderful
puppyhood. Some pups have been with Gloria since they were only a week old and
have learned 'doggy manners' as they have to share with 20 other dogs. They are
given excellent food, wonderful walks in the bush (including swimming in
billabongs) and this means that they don't have the tragic issues of many city
dogs which have been abused. All the desert dogs get on with other dogs, avoid
trouble and have learned to be submissive. They ignore cats and other animals
and like children and as they are crossbreeds they are very healthy due to
hybrid vigour. Sadly, despite the work of volunteers and the dedication shown by both Gloria Morales, vet Dr Honey Nelson and Dr Steve Cutter from AMRRIC (Animal Management in Rural Remote Indigenous Communities), changes to funding management by the local shire mean the future and the program is at risk. Ms Morales is currently campaigning for the vital $25,000 p.a. minimum needed over the next 5 years. If she succeeds, Yuendumu could become a national success story and a prototype for all other remote communities. "There are only so many puppies that we can re-home, and if we are forced to abandon the Desert Dogs project Yuendumu will revert to having a plague of diseased and hungry dogs and this will have a major detrimental impact on the already poor health of these communities" adds Gloria. If you would like to help the "Desert Dog Project" by becoming a foster carer, please complete our Foster Carer Enquiry Form and make sure you let us know that you are particularly interested in fostering a Desert puppy! Desert dogs and puppies are now available for the special adoption fee of $360 thanks to both AMRRIC and the Green Cross in Coogee, NSW who have provided them with reduced rates for all their veterinary work. As the dog program in Yuendumu improves, other local communities now bring abandoned and sick dogs to "The Dog Lady" who needs assistance with basic vet supplies and funds to transport dogs to vets in the cities. We also need QANTAS passengers who are prepared to accompany a dog to a new home or to a foster carer in major cities as this saves the Dog Project paying freight charges. If you would like to help, or to obtain more information, please phone Sandra on 0411 530346.
For those who may be
interested, a PHD student studying
dingoes in the area took DNA from about 25 of Gloria's dogs and the results
showed that there was less than a 50% chance of any of them having Dingo blood
in them. Further studies have since been completed.

Junior and his brothers
Norman
and
Bluey
are affectionately known
as the 'three musketeers'
as they are always together and look like little
triplets.
Junior
is a wonderful, playful,
friendly boy who
is sporting a rather "hang dog" look because
he was disturbed from playing
with his friends and swimming in the Billabong
in order to have his
photo taken.
Junior is
used to living indoors and having lots of company therefore is
best suited to a
home where
there is another dog or with
people who are home for most of the
day. Junior is a very laid back dog.
UPDATE 10 MAY: Junior's brother Bluey recently got a home and as Bluey loves the 3 year old toddler there (who he covers in licks!) there is no reason that Junior would not make a good addition to any family who would like a gorgeous, large crossbreed dog as he is evern more laid back than Bluey! Junior is one of a number of puppies available for adoption from a remote community in the Northern Territory. Their rescuer raises the most wonderful pups .... all are different, all are blends of numerous different breeds and are very healthy young dogs with great temperaments. These puppies have been well socialised with other dogs, people, children and the large number that have been rehomed in Sydney and interstate to date have been great with cats as well. All our 'desert puppies' are available for adoption outside NSW.
Junior comes desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed, on heartworm prevention and with NSW Local Council lifetime registration for $360. If you would like more information on Junior please email using ADOPTION ENQUIRY as your Subject Heading. Before phoning or emailing, please check the 'Desert Dogs' page on www.paws.com.au for any updated photos and to make sure these dogs are still available for adoption.

Male Bull Terrier X Puppy Aged approx. 3 months Large size (when fully grown) Jangala was found as a skinny, malnourished pup but, under the care of Gloria, he is now happy and healthy with a chubby tum! Jangala plays happily with his friends in the pack and, like all Gloria's other pups, has a lovely nature. Most of Jangala's doggy pals have been rehomed in Sydney with children, cats and other dogs. He is in good health and is a lovely pup and has been given an important name. Jangala is named after one of the older and respected artists who never goes anywhere without his five fat and happy dogs! UPDATE 10 MAY: Jangala recently had an adventure! While on the dogs wonderful daily walk in the bush to the billabong he wandered off from the pack and was lost for 2 weeks. However, being an intelligent "camp dog" he found his way back home again. He was very thin and scrawny but, once back in the pack and getting well fed again, he is now back to being a sturdy and happy boy. All the desert dogs are used to walking off lead and don't wander off so it was very unusual for this to happen but Jangala has learned his lesson! UPDATE 16 JULY: With all the puppies coming and going Jangala thought he deserved an update and so did we! Jangala is now in Sydney and has grown into a wonderful, placid dog yet with lots of personality. He is content with life whether it involves a game with a ball or just sitting beside you watching the sun slowly disappear. Jangala has gentlemanly manners and is not noisy nor bossy, Unlike the younger puppies he will not chew your favourite shoes, forget to go outside to toilet or dig you a swimming pool! So why not adopt yourself a true friend and forget the hassle and stress of everyday life. Instead you can just sit with someone who will listen to your every word, enjoy your company and never complain.Jangala is one of a number of puppies available for adoption from a remote community in the Northern Territory. Their rescuer raises the most wonderful pups .... all are different, all are blends of numerous different breeds and are very healthy young dogs with great temperaments. Female Kelpie X Puppy Aged approx. 4 months Small to Medium size (when fully grown) Pia is sister to Franklyn and Baby Girl and will grow to around the size of a small Kelpie. As she is such a young dog she will need company and exercise and would not suit a home where she would spend every long working day alone.
UPDATE 16 JULY:
Pia is now a young lady in foster care in Sydney
and her way of life is simple - she aims to involve herself with play,
her family, eating and sleeping. She is excited by life and is suitably
sized for a family who enjoys the outdoors and having fun. Pia likes to
explore nature, it doesn't matter whether its at the park or the beach
just as long as she has someone willing to play a game with her. Pia is
no trouble and enjoys walking and meeting other people, especially if
they have their doggy friends with them as she is a social butterfly who
gets along with everyone she meets. Pia would love a home where she
would be the centre of attention on occasions, go for regular walks,
have playtime outside but most of all share everyday with someone who
truly loves her for the beautiful young lady she has grown to be.
Pia comes desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed, on heartworm prevention and with NSW Local Council lifetime registration for $360. If you would like more information on Pia please email using ADOPTION ENQUIRY as your Subject Heading. Before phoning or emailing, please check the 'Desert Dogs' page on www.paws.com.au for any updated photos and to make sure this dog is still available for adoption.
